Sutton Lasater Jewelry began in 2003 when I inherited a dresser full of costume jewelry from a very fashionable family friend who had collected jewelry her whole life. I wasn’t into jewelry or jewelry making at the time, but realized her collection was something special. A lot of the pieces were broken or outdated and I decided something needed to be done with them. I ended up recreating some of the pieces from her collection into wearable jewelry that was current and fashionable.
As far as jewelry making went, I didn’t really know what I was doing, but since I love learning new things, I enjoyed the challenge of teaching myself something new. As with most new hobbies, I was initially hooked, but my interest in jewelry making didn’t wear off over time. I ended up getting a job at a bead store so I could learn everything I could about jewelry and jewelry making. Creating something beautiful with my own two hands was so rewarding that I started spending all my free time designing and creating new pieces. About the same time I realized I had spent almost all of my money just to make jewelry for myself, a few of my friends told me they wanted to buy some of the pieces I had made and that’s when I started selling my creations.
After high school, I was recruited to St. Louis University on an athletic scholarship and my jewelry business had to take a backseat to school and volleyball. Although I was taking a little break from growing my business, I was still very passionate about jewelry design and when I found out there was an Entrepreneurship program at SLU, I knew I needed to switch over from my original Biology major and start learning practical business skills that would help me with my jewelry business. After graduating from SLU with an Entrepreneurship degree and Spanish minor, I went to the University of Tennessee where I earned my MBA with concentrations in Marketing and Entrepreneurship. When I completed my masters degree, I decided to move back to St. Louis to work for my family business (West Model & Talent Management) and continue to grow Sutton Lasater Jewelry.
As an entrepreneur, you can’t be successful if you don’t love what you’re doing, and jewelry is truly my passion. Sutton Lasater Jewelry is growing and improving everyday. Our online boutique launched in April 2011, we are in multiple St. Louis boutiques with more on the way, our wedding line has expanded, and we are constantly booking home parties and shows. I have been immensely blessed to have found my passion and am grateful for all the support I have received along the way. Outside of Sutton Lasater Jewelry, I love to read, travel, and learn new things, and am lucky to be able to give back to future generations of entrepreneurs as an adjunct professor in the SLU Entrepreneurship Program.
